ISPCA warning to cat dumpers 14.08.08

THE ISPCA have warned people who dump defenceless cats and kittens on the roadways that they could face jail. The warning came as residents of Redcastle and Muff outlined their shock at the number of cats found abandoned on the busy Derry to Moville road.
	They say the main road has become a 'dumping ground' for unwanted cats and kittens and many of the unfortunate creatures are then run over by cars. Gardai or animal protection agencies have received no formal complaints. But the ISPCA warned that those responsible could be prosecuted.
"People may not be aware that under the animal welfare legislation, it is an offence to dump animals in situations and circumstances that are likely to cause unnecessary suffering," the ISPCA's Kevin McGinley told the BBC this week. Speaking on radio this week, Redcastle's Ann Marie Orr said the ongoing problem was upsetting her young children. "They don't understand why, when you go down the road, there's a cat lying dead but hopefully it will stop," she said.
