MORE than 100
schoolchildren from Muff, the Illies and Derry will
take part in a unique cross border hurling
tournament this Friday.
The clash of the ash will take place at Templemore
Sports Complex in Derry and is the next step in
increasing the awareness of the sport in the city
and region.
Four schools will participate in the event including
St Therese's PS and Gaelscoil Eadain Mhór from Derry
along with Muff NS and Illies NS from Inishowen.
It is being organised by Derry City Council together
with Derry and Donegal County Boards.
Urban Gaelic Games Coach with Derry City Council's
Sports Development section, Shauna McCallion
explained: "This cross border event aims to develop
an interest in the region for this highly skilled
sport. Participants from each school will be mixed
to form individual teams which will give the
opportunity to meet new friends while also engaging
in some fun activity."
The tournament is being facilitated by Na Magha
Hurling club together with Shauna McCallion (Derry
City Council's Sports Development Section) and Gavin
Craig (Donegal GAA Hurling Development Officer).
