Buncrana lights committee pulls the plug 11.09.08

THE question mark over whether or not there will be Christmas lights erected in Buncrana which has been a bone of contention in recent years, has been raised early this year following confirmation that the Christmas Street Lights committee has decided to disband.
According to the Chamber of Commerce in Buncrana, they have received notification that the committee has decided to disband with immediate effect.
“We are sure people of Buncrana will be disappointed to hear this news but we would like to thank the previous committee members and associated volunteers for their hard work, commitment and achievements over the years,” a spokesperson for the Chamber of Commerce said.
However they have indicated that the chamber will be willing to step in to help anyone interested in ensuring that Buncrana is not left in darkness over the festive season.
Buncrana Town Centre “The Chamber of Commerce has always been supportive of the event, therefore we are happy to facilitate any individuals or groups who would like to become involved with the Christmas Lights in 2008,” the chamber spokesperson said.
Describing the news that the committee has disbanded as “very sad news” the spokesperson
added that it leaves the future of the Christmas Street Lights tradition in doubt for this year.
“The ‘Switching On of the Christmas Lights’ has always been a well supported and attended event, by families, businesses and community groups.”
With that in mind the chamber is hopeful that with time on their side, a solution can be found to ensure that there are lights in Buncrana this year.
“We would also be happy to compile any ideas and offers of support or assistance. Those interested should contact the Chamber’s office on Railway Road.”
