Children aged 12 offered drink

CHILDREN as young
as 12 are being offered alcohol in Moville,
according to a concerned community worker.
David Simpson said the findings from the Moville
Alcohol Project was "particularly alarming". |
"Our survey last year
identified the easy availability of alcohol as one
of the main contributing factors to underage
drinking. However it is the offering of alcohol to
young people who are not yet teenagers by older
young people and adults that is particularly
alarming,” said Mr. Simpson, the project
co-ordinator.
The aim of the ongoing project is to protect the
next generation of young people from alcohol-related
harm.

programme acknowledged
that it would take years to change the "weary
acceptance" of underage drinking that exists in
Ireland.
In the light of this, the project has taken the
title 'Project 2027' going forward.
It is carrying out focus groups in Moville with
people of all ages to find out how people think the
community can best protect young people. A
successful discussion has already been held with 15
and 16 year olds in the town and the project is
inviting everyone to more focus group meetings
planned for the month of June. They will take place
as follows:
Women: Tuesday, 10th June at 11.30am in Serenity
House; men: Monday, 16th June at 11am in Moville Day
Centre; young adults (18 years to 30 years), Monday,
16th June at 7.30pm in Serenity House and parents:
23rd June at 7.30pm in Serenity House
“There is already more discussion in the town about
the problem, now we need to gather together people’s
thinking so that we can turn back this tide of
neglect and thoughtlessness and help create a
community that actively protects its young people,"
added Mr. Simpson. |
