€308K to help former
salmon workers
10.03.08
INISHOWEN is to get
€308,000 to help create jobs and training for people
who lost their jobs with the demise of the local
driftnet salmon industry.
The funding is part of a €5 million national fund
for people who were employed directly by fishermen
or who had ancillary jobs connected to the
now-defunct salmon sector. |
The money is separate
from the €15m Salmon Hardship Scheme set up to
compensate the individual fishermen who lost their
licences under the conservation scheme including
Foyle driftnet fishermen.
The €308,000 will be distributed by the IRDL strand
of the Inishowen Development Partnership (IDP) under
a new Community Support Scheme designed to create
economic opportunities for former crews and
employees. |

It was welcomed by
Donegal North East T.D., Deputy Niall Blaney who
confirmed that the Donegal Local Development Company
would also receive €300,000 to administer the scheme
in the rest of Donegal.
"This €5 million Community Support Scheme is not
directly meant for commercial salmon fishing licence
holders, as they will have the opportunity to avail
of payments under the Salmon Hardship Fund," he
explained.
"The fund is to assist in the development of new job
opportunities for the extended labour force which
have also been affected by the withdrawal of
commercial salmon fishing."
Deputy Blaney said it was hoped those who lost their
jobs could get involved in retraining or start-ups.
"It is intended that it will assist in the
retraining of the affected workers, and in the
development of new projects in the affected
communities," he said.
The deadline for project funding is December 31,
2008. |
