OPW to sell Buncrana Garda
station

A PRIME piece of real
estate will be up for grabs in Buncrana when the
Office of Public Works (OPW) puts the old Garda
station on the market.
The OPW yesterday confirmed it would be selling off
the century-old building that was vacated last year
by Gardai who are now in temporary accommodation in
Lisfannon. "Our intention is to sell the property in
due course but it's early days yet and we will not
be putting it on the market until the new Garda
station is at a well advanced stage," said an OPW
spokesman. |

He said while there was
no prospect of local Gardai returning to the old
building, it would not be policy to sell their
premises until they are permanently housed
elsewhere.
Brendan McGee of Franklin's estate agents in
Buncrana, yesterday described the old station site
as a "great location at the heart of the town
centre". |
However, he said any
future buyer would probably have to demolish the
building.
"That would be a demolition and redevelopment job
and I would imagine it would be best suited to mixed
commercial/residential use," he said.
He estimated that, in today's market and subject to
a number of variables including planning permission
and what's allowed to be developed there, the land
was worth in the region of between €550,000 and
€850,000.
Meanwhile, the OPW said it would sell the property
on the open market to the highest bidder either
through a local estate agent or by public tender.
The spokesman estimated that it would not go on sale
for at least a year to 15 months. |
