Gleneely DJ makes his Mark
19.02.08
A GLENEELY man is
carving out a bright future for himself at Ireland's
newest radio station.
Mark Cunning is enjoying his new job at iRadio, a
regional radio service targeting the 15-34 age group
in the North West.
IRadio is based in Galway but covers the entire
region including Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and
Donegal. |
It is predominately
music-driven but puts a lot of emphasis on
interacting with its listeners. Twenty-four year old
Mark is the son of Mary Cunning (nee McCauley) from
Trenbane House in Carn. His grandmother
Kathleen, ran McLaughlin's shop in Gleneely for many
years.
"I was born in Derry but spent my first year in
Trenbane and after that, all my summer
holidays," he said. While he was reared in |

his father Damian's
hometown of Coleraine, Co. Derry, the young radio
presenter very much considers himself a Donegal man.
He cut his teeth in radio at a tender age, joining
Q97.2 in Coleraine at just 17. It wasn't long before
his talents were noticed and he was headhunted by
Cool FM in Belfast.
"I joined Cool FM when I was about 21 and most of my
programmes were music-driven. But things weren't
going the way I planned at Cool so when my
girlfriend Paula wanted to move home to Sligo, I
applied for the job at iRadio."
The couple live in Tubbercurry, Co. Sligo and Mark
makes the long commute daily into Galway. His show
is called ‘iWork with Mark’ and is a mix of music
and informal chat from 12.45pm to 4pm. "Our target
age group is 15 to 34 year olds so we do a lot of
contemporary music with plenty of classics as well."
i102-104 only went live last month and broadcasts 24
hours a day, seven days a week. |
