DACC's 'hair-raising' Wig Walk 20.08.08

DONEGAL Action for Cancer Care (DACC) is inviting people to sign up and
join them for their unique Cross Border Wig Walk on Saturday, October 4, 2008.
The Wig Walk is an eight-mile walk to raise money for cancer care on both sides of the border and will take place in Atlantic Drive, Downings, Co. Donegal.
It is called the Wig Walk to acknowledge the sensitive issue of hair-loss caused by chemotherapy treatment.
"Credit for this novel positive approach must go to Meabh Conaghan in Letterkenny and Marie Marin in Belfast. These are two good friends coming together for the good of cancer patients. One could say they're 'putting their heads together'," said DACC chairperson Betty Holmes.
All walkers are asked to wear any kind of wig to show solidarity and support. Men, women and children are all welcome to take part in the colourful event.
"An important part of the Wig Walk is to have some fun and help people realise that there is life after diagnosis.
"We want to promote the concept of cancer survivors, not cancer victims. Don't
worry if you feel that the eight miles is too much for you, just do what
you can, it all makes a difference," added Betty.
Walkers can choose to donate to either DACC who will share their fundraising with the Oncology Department of Letterkenny General Hospital, or Friends of Cancer Centre in Belfast which is a regional cancer centre for Northern Ireland. Walkers are asked to register on the website www.wigwalk.com , call DACC 074 91 28400 or email them at equal@dacc.ie .
