Mixed reaction to €5m harbours
fund
20.02.08
THERE has been mixed
reaction to the €5 million awarded to pier and
harbours around Inishowen.
Under the latest allocation from the Department of
Fisheries and Food, Greencastle Harbour gets €3.6m;
the Buncrana breakwater project gets €900,000;
Moville Pier gets €22,500 and Glengad Pier gets
€13,125.
The funding was welcomed by Senator Cecilia Keaveney. |
She said: “Under the
scheme the Greencastle Harbour development project
will receive €3.6 million, which will enable
continued progress on the construction of the
breakwater at Greencastle.
"This project is being carried out and managed on
behalf of Donegal County Council by the Department’s
engineers whose expertise and |
|
experience in this type
of work is widely acknowledged as being of the
highest standard."
The €22,500 for Moville Pier is for the improvement
of the slipway and decking on the pier while the
money for Glengad Pier is for repairs to the
slipway.
Cllr. Joe Doherty yesterday also welcomed the
€900,000 for Buncrana. He said the money would
probably cover the full cost of the project.
But Foyle Fishermen's Co-Op in Greencastle were less
than happy. Manager John O'Kane said the Greencastle
Harbour project was estimated to cost around €11m.
He said he would "be an old man" before the project
was completed. |
