UNDERFUNDING is causing
"undue hardship" to people with physical and sensory
disabilities in Inishowen and other parts of
Donegal, a support group has warned.
The Donegal Centre for Independent Living (DCIL)
says the lack of sufficient Government funding will
be high on the agenda at its AGM next Tuesday,
September 16.
The DCIL promotes independent living for people with
physical and/or sensory disabilities through the
philosophy of independent living. It is primarily
based on the principle of self-direction and choice.
The centre is currently facilitating more than 100
people with disabilities throughout the county to
live independently within their community through a
range of services. The principle service is the
Personal Assistance Service but it is not reaching
everyone that needs it.
"The Personal Assistance Service has transformed the
lives of its users and is the cornerstone of the
Independent Living movement," explained
Inishowen-born DCIL manager Rosaleen Bradley.
"However, many with physical/sensory disabilities in
County Donegal have been assessed and qualify, for
the service but DCIL are unable to help them due to
Government underfunding. This is causing undue
hardship and is denying these people their right to
live as equal citizens."
Despite their immediate concerns, the centre had a
very busy and successful year including the official
opening of their new offices in Letterkenny, the
launch of its website
www.donegalcil.com and the opening of Anne
Marie’s Library.
DCIL is appealing for a full turn out at the AGM.
"It's vital that everyone availing of our services
have an input into the running of the company,"
added Rosaleen. |
