Tuning up for the last Ar Ais Arís
26.03.08
THE third and final Ar
Ais Arís festival kicks off in Buncrana this
Thursday with a packed programme of great music and
entertainment. |
The line-up includes
the premiere of ‘Francesco Walks’ a
specially-commissioned work by Mícheál Ó
Súilleabháin. The traditional composer says of the
piece: “When asked to write music for the Ar Ais
Arís Festival that would involve traditional
musicians from the area of the Inishowen peninsula,
my mind was immediately drawn towards a dialogue of
a string ensemble from classical tradition and the
local voice.
"Having spent some time in the |
|
area several years ago
while performing at the McGlinchey School in
Clonmany, I had a strong personal sense of the area.
There was a magic about the place that stayed with
me afterwards."
Music fans planning to travel to Buncrana for the
weekend will get the chance to hear Sharon Shannon
and Renegade, Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe
Tones and Four Men and a Dog to name but a few.
And as in the previous two years, homegrown
favourites, The Pyros, return for two late night
gigs on Friday, March 28 and Saturday, March 29 in
the Inishowen Gateway Hotel. The Ar Ais Arís weekend
promises a great mix of workshops, impromptu pub
sessions, and song and dance including a Céilí Mór
in Tullyarvan Mill.
Meanwhile, the festival finale will be 'The Very
Best of Budgen' concert featuring, among many
others, Kevin Doherty; Paul Rodden; Ciaran Tourish
and Dermot Byrne; Liz Doherty and Aileach with Dinny
McLaughlin, Bernard Heaney, Pat McCabe and Brian
McGrory. For more, visit
