MBE award for Ludden nurse
09.01.08
A LUDDEN woman is
getting set to rub shoulders with a host of
celebrities after she was awarded an MBE in the New
Year’s Honours list.
Retired nurse Bridie McLaughlin was the only person
from the Republic of Ireland to be named in this
year's British Honours List and speaking to the
Inishowen Independent during the week said she was
delighted to have received such an honour. “I was
really delighted when I heard, it was a bit of a
shock I really never expected anything like this,”
she said. |
Bridie retired from her
position at Altnagelvin Hospital in June where she
specialised in Acute Medical Nursing and since then
has been getting used to retirement. “When you are
used to working long hours it takes a bit of getting
used to but I am enjoying it,” said Bridie. The
local woman says she thinks she was nominated for
the award by senior members of the medical staff at
Altnagelvin and says she thinks it is great that the
nursing profession has been recognised in such a
fashion. “It is nice that an award like this has
been given to a nurse, in recognition of all the
hard work we do.” Having been notified by post of

award, Bridie says she
is now looking forward to the trip to London for the
ceremony, but added that as yet she is unsure when
that will happen.
“The ceremony will take place sometime in the next
few months, but I will get six weeks notice,” she
said.
She can also take three people with her on the day
but wasn’t giving away just yet who they might be.
Whoever gets to go could be rubbing shoulders with
some top class celebrities with others named on the
list this year including Kylie Minogue, Jasper
Conran and Des Lynam, all of whom are to get an OBE,
Julie Walters (CBE) and Michael Parkinson, who
received a knighthood. Story:
