Clonmany cyclist to pedal
2,200km for charity
24.06.08
A CLONMANY sports
lecturer is undertaking a unique charity cycle later
this month when he pedals the 2,200km journey taken
by the chieftains of Ulster during the Flight of the
Earls.
Michael Toland who teaches sports science at the
North West Regional College in Derry will undertake
the marathon cycle with two old college friends to
commemorate the 400th anniversary of the 'Flight of
the Earls' and to raise money for cancer patients in
Inishowen and nationally. |
"This journey will
incorporate 2,200km of cycling over 22 days in June
and July 2008. We will pass through several
countries including France, Belgium, Switzerland and
Italy arriving in Rome on July 20, 2008, crossing
the Alps as we do so," explained Michael.
"We hope to raise as much money as we can for cancer
care." The lads including Grahame Cleary and Damien
Hardiman have set up a website where people can
donate money online.
"Any donations to this site will go to the Irish
Cancer Society specifically to cancer research.
However, as I am from Donegal I want to raise money
also for local cancer services and I |

chosen the Donegal
Hospice and Carndonagh hospice services as
beneficiaries too."
The three pals will start their marathon cycle on
Sunday, June 29, 2008 from Quillebeuf near Le Havre
in northern France. They will then cycle to Louvain
in Belgium and southwards. They cross the Swiss Alps
into Italy and onwards to Rimini on the Adriatic
coast where they will veer south over the Apennines
and into Rome. They plan to average around 100km -
60 miles - cycling a day and hope the journey will
take around 22 days.
Michael has dropped sponsorship cards into a number
of outlets throughout Inishowen. He stressed that
all monies raised will go directly to cancer care as
the three cyclists will fund all their own expenses
including travel, accommodation and equipment. If

upcoming trip, visit
