Major exhibition of McCormick's work 11.04.08

A MAJOR retrospective of the work of the late Inishowen architect Liam McCormick will be launched at the Irish Architectural Archive in Dublin later this month.
The launch will coincide with the publication of a book about McCormick entitled 'North by North West' edited by Irish architect and Sunday Times architecture critic, Shane O'Toole.
The official launch will be performed at the Irish Architectural Archive in Merrion Square by Nobel Laureate, John Hume, who was a personal friend of the late Greencastle architect.

Liam McCormick's famous St. Aengus Chapel, Burt. The retrospective will include a selection of photographs of McCormick's most iconic religious and secular works but it will also carry interpretative information about his long and distinguished career, his love of the sea, and a selection of designs by various artists commissioned to decorate his churches. A much-loved portrait of the architect by renowned Irish painter Derek
Hill will also be on show.
McCormick's widow Joy, told InishowenNews.com yesterday: "The exhibition and the new book are great tributes to Liam, his work and his love of the sea. During his career, everybody wanted him to move to Dublin to become part of the Dublin architecture scene but he couldn't be tempted away from Donegal. His inspiration came from Inishowen and from the sea around Inishowen."
Among the main features of the exhibition will be details about his award-winning St Aengus Church, known locally as Burt Chapel.
It was designed by McCormick between 1964 and 1967 and won the RIAI Triennial Gold Medal in 1971. It is also the holder of the 'Building of the 20th Century' title. The building takes its inspiration from the nearby Grianan of Aileach ringfort and is circular in design with a distinctive sweeping copper roof rising asymmetrically to a spire. But lovers of architecture in general, and McCormick's work, in particular, will also be treated to details of his lesser known work including his local authority housing and school designs.
The publication and the exhibition will be sponsored by Harcourt Developments in association with the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI). North by North West will be officially launched on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at 6pm.
