No McGlinchey Summer School this year  22.04.08

THE popular McGlinchey Summer School in Clonmany will not take place this year.
The committee who worked hard on the cultural summer school for more than ten years said they would use the break to review the event and find new ways of communicating the festival's ethos.
The McGlinchey Summer School began in 1998 to showcase many aspects of life in Inishowen including the hospitality of the people, its spectacular scenery and its cultural and artistic life.

Musicians at the McGlinchey Summer School in 2006 The very first school celebrated the folklore collected by the schoolchildren of Clonmany. A fresh theme was chosen each year and among them were 'Life and Landscape'; 'Emigration' and 'Our Maritime Heritage'.
But according to chairman, Marius Ó hEarcain the event's main purpose was "to create a greater awareness of our rich heritage".
Mr. Ó hEarcain yesterday said the committee would use the break to take stock and to consider all the options going forward.
"The committee has decided that rather than continue with the Summer School in 2008, we will try to find imaginative ways of communicating our knowledge of the past to a younger generation, to take possession of our inheritance and to initiate local projects, such as the preservation of the O’Doherty Castle at Carraig a’Brachaí," he said.
This 10th issue of the McGlinchey Summer School magazine, 'It’s Us They’re Talking About', is currently on sale in a number of local shops around the peninsula.
