DONEGAL Action for
Cancer Care has welcomed the official opening of the
newly refurbished Breast Cancer Centre at
Letterkenny General Hospital.
DACC chairperson Betty Holmes praised the "great
vision" of the county's new breast surgeon Dr
Michael Sugrue for overseeing the completion of the
centre.
"In five and ten years time, we will have one of the
leading breast cancer facilities in the world on our
doorstep and one that would be internationally
recognised," said Ms Holmes.
"This is a great day for the women of the North West
to have access to a very impressive, modern and
state of the art service."
DACC said women who have already attended the new
clinic are speaking highly of its standards.
"We see this unit as the advancement of work that a
lot of people within the hospital have been working
away at over the last few years. It is very
important that we realise the value of the
development of this service.
"We believe that the unit staff along with hospital
general manager Sean Murphy are committed to the
development of breast cancer services in Donegal, in
conjunction with the region's designated cancer
centre at University College Hospital, Galway." DACC
said it now eagerly awaited the "long overdue"
arrival of the national screening programme,
BreastCheck early in 2009.
"It is important in these difficult times that we do
all we can to make sure that the services we have at
Letterkenny Hospital are kept there, developed and
not allowed to be part of our Government's health
cutbacks," added Ms Holmes. |
