THE future of industry
in Donegal is at risk following the lay-offs
announced at the Oatfield sweet factory, according
to Deputy Joe McHugh.
Oatfield’s, operational since 1927,
announced on Friday that 14 workers would be made
redundant under rationalisation plans due to the
recent downturn in the economy. |
“These job losses are a
blow to the town of Letterkenny and my thoughts are
with those who lost their jobs and their families,"
said Deputy McHugh.
"Letterkenny has lost 14 jobs, which was necessary
for the company in light of recent market changes.
If this downsizing is necessary in other industries,
Donegal will suffer massive losses. The county is
lacking in high-tech, high-value jobs and in the
current climate, we will suffer."
The Fine Gael T.D., urged the Government to "take
action" rather than commission |

"Fianna Fáil’s inept handling of the economy is at the heart
of the problems facing us and action is long
overdue.
"At the very least both those in work and those
unemployed must be given the chance to gain the
necessary qualifications to seek employment.
"I urge Enterprise Minister Michéal Martin to look
at proposals by my Fine Gael colleague Leo Varadkar
and initiate a national up-skilling programme
targeted at the unemployed, under-employed and
people in low skilled jobs." |
