GREEN Party candidate
Sheenagh McMahon is hoping to explore the
genealogical connection between US President elect
Barack Obama and the Kearney families of Inishowen.
Researchers from Trinity College and
IrishOrigins.com recently traced Obama's family
history and found that his earliest known relative,
his sixth great grandfather, was a member of a
family of wealthy wig makers who included an Irish
politician, Michael Kearney. |
Ms McMahon said she
said Obama-Kearney connection became a huge topic of
interest at a reunion of mid-Ulster Kearneys during
the summer.
"My own great great grand uncle was Monsigneur
Kearney who was parish priest of Buncrana around the
1900s. It would appear that Kearneys all over the
world are connected," she said.

candidate whose maiden
name is O'Doherty hopes to contact relatives who are
active in the O'Doherty Clan geneology.
"Hopefully, they will be able to help me in looking
into this connection a bit further," she said.
Meanwhile, she is delighted with Obama's historic
win in the US presidential elections.
“I’m delighted the America people have elected him
and that they have voted for change in such an
overwhelming way.”
“Inishowen is also ready for political change and I
hope the people of Inishowen let me bring some of
that change to Donegal County Council and Buncrana
Town Council.” |
