A LOCAL senator has
called for the Rent-a-Room Scheme to be advertised
more prominently to help students from the county
find accommodation in Dublin and other college
cities.
Senator Pearse Doherty said the existing scheme,
allowing homeowners to earn €10,000 a year tax free
by renting out a room in their homes, could help
with the lack of student accommodation nationally.
He also called on people living in Dublin and
elsewhere to "open up their homes" to their fellow
Donegal people.
“Last week the Union of Students in Ireland called
on the Government to establish a task force on
student accommodation. The critical shortage of
housing in Ireland is putting severe pressure on
students trying to find accommodation," said Senator
Doherty.
“While I want to support the call from the USI, I
would also call on the Minister for Education to
initiate a promotional campaign to highlight the
Rent a Room Scheme which has the potential to ease
the accommodation crisis for students." |
