Rural bus service a step closer

INISHOWEN Development
Partnership (IDP) will shortly begin consulting with
the public about how best to roll out a new €500,000
rural transport scheme in the peninsula.
It was announced in February that Inishowen had been
chosen as a location for the nationwide Rural
Transport Programme to help people with no car get
access to basic essential services such as the
doctor, post office and shops.
The IDP is co-ordinating the Department of Transport
scheme in association with organisations such as
Action Inishowen, local family resource centres,
disability groups, as well as public and private
transport operators.
Towards that aim, three public consultation evenings
will now be held early in May to get the views of
the community about the rural transport needs of the
peninsula.
According to the IDP "an effective plan to address
those gaps in transport that impact most on the
community" will then be drawn up. |

Following the announcement of the scheme in
February, IDP co-manager Andrew Ward said the exact
nature of the scheme first had to be determined
before the money was drawn down for Inishowen. He
said the scheme might well include a mix of public
and private transport.
Mr. Ward also said that areas that recently lost the
Lough Swilly bus service including Malin would be
closely examined. |

The public consultation
evenings will take place as follows:
Monday, May 12, at 7.30 pm - Tullyarvan Mill,
Buncrana
Tuesday, May 13, at 7.30 pm - the Bocan Hall,
Culdaff
Wednesday, May 14 at 7.30 pm - Quigley’s Point
Community Centre.
