Clonmany woman's big
sandwich challenge
29.09.08
A CLONMANY woman is
urging the people of Donegal to use their loaf to
help millions of starving people in Africa.
Lorraine McPeake is co-ordinating her home county's
response to National Sandwich Day on behalf of Self
Help Africa (SHA).
The organisation is hoping to raise more than €1m
during a ten-week national campaign, culminating in
the first ever National Sandwich Day on Friday,
November 14. Lorraine is aiming to raise at least
€80,000 over the next couple of months and is
currently contacting businesses, groups and schools
around the county outlining the campaign and
encouraging people to participate.
The event is sponsored by Pat the Baker and anyone
who wishes to take part is supplied with free loaves
of bread. The profits from the sandwich sales will
go directly to Self Help Africa to help fund their
work in Africa. Lorraine will be on hand to provide
help and support to anyone who wishes to organise an
event, big or small. "The response during the early
stages of the campaign has been very positive with
several people expressing an interest in helping,"
she said. |
If you would like to
find out more in person, Lorraine will be discussing
the campaign with a gathering at the Greenbank Hall,
Quigley's Point on Friday, October 10 at 2pm.
She said a local band, The White Shadows, had
already offered to perform a charity gig at the
Malin Hotel on Friday, October 24 with all proceeds
going to Self Help Africa. |

to the challenges faced by Africa's rural poor and
is currently working with local staff, partners and
communities in Ethiopia, Eritrea, Malawi, Zambia,
