25 sign up for Red Cross sky dive

by Simon McGeady, Inishowen Independent

THE MALIN Head Red Cross are taking their fundraising efforts for a base in the area to new heights with a sponsored sky dive this August. To date, 25 people have signed up to take part in the adrenalin-pumping event, which will take place in the skies over Co Offaly.
The event is being organised by Malin Head Red Cross committee member Colm Kelly. He says the response has been good to date, especially from the women of the area.
“So far we have eight men signed up to do the jump and the rest are women. The organisers can take up to 55 on the day, so we’ll leave the registration open for a few more weeks to see how many more people we can get to do it.”

Most of the participants, including Colm, have no prior sky-diving experience, but all are united in their desire to provide a first response service for Malin Head.
“We already have a defibrillator based in Malin Head and 16 people trained how to use it, but we want to get more life-saving equipment and eventually have a new centre of our own.
“In the next couple of weeks we will be linking up with the ambulance service so they can alert us immediately when an emergency call comes from Malin Head in and we can get to the scene.
“In April one of our members was at the scene of an emergency with the defibrillator inside four minutes. On that occasion the person in trouble recovered and we didn’t need to use the equipment, but it shows you the value of having trained, equipped volunteers in the area. Our Red Cross volunteers can be on the scene maybe 15 minutes ahead of the ambulance and provide treatment while the ambulance is on it’s way,” said the Ashley Martin employee. Those signing up for the sky dive have to raise €650, half of which will go to the Malin Head Red Cross fund and the other half to the company organising the parachute jump.
On the 13th of June a sky-diving instructor will give an information evening for those taking part at the Crossroads Inn, Malin Head.
“I’ve always wanted to do a sky dive, and this will be my chance, although I’ll be getting nervous when we get closer to the time,” said Mr Kelly.
