County Council thanks
Inishowen groups

PEOPLE in Inishowen
have been urged to check that the smoke alarms in
their elderly neighbours' homes are working.
Donegal's chief fire officer, Bobby McMenamin made
the call during an event to thank the community and
voluntary groups in Donegal who helped with the roll
out of the Community Smoke Alarm Scheme to
vulnerable households.
Action Inishowen and the Buncrana Senior Citizens'
committee, were tasked with the smooth running of
the scheme in the peninsula. Action Inishowen's
Margaret Glackin and Jim Henderson from the Buncrana
Senior Citizens' committee were among those who
attended the recent event. |

Figures released at the
event show that by the end of this year, 500 homes
throughout the county including Inishowen, will be
fitted with smoke alarms under this potentially
life-saving scheme. The scheme is administered by
Donegal County Council's Community and Enterprise
Section.
Mr. McMenamin told the gathering: "It is very
important for neighbours visiting older people to
check if the smoke alarms are operating or need a
battery."
Meanwhile, county manager Michael McLoone
acknowledged the important contribution of groups
such as Action Inishowen in the delivery of the
scheme.
"It is the community and voluntary organisations who
have the intelligence on the ground of the needs of
their community and they were of great help to
Donegal County Council in identifying the vulnerable
households for this particular scheme. "This scheme
has been a resounding success in other parts of the
country and we in Donegal are delighted to have the
opportunity to build on this success and to
contribute to fire safety in the home. Smoke alarms
can save lives," said Mr. McLoone.
A total of 19 community and voluntary organisations
submitted applications for smoke alarms. |
