Spike Milligan letter on show in
Dunree

ONE of the most popular
exhibits on display as part of the Rockhill
Collection at Fort Dunree is a letter from the late
comedy genius Spike Milligan.
Penned 24 years ago to the Irish Defence Forces,
Milligan's letter seeks to trace the army records of
his ancestor - William Milligan, who was born in
Buncrana.
The letter, written in 1984, also makes reference to
Milligan's Irish citizenship and his own
participation in army life. The following is the
full text of the letter as can best be deciphered: |

Dear Sir,
An ancestor of mine on (sic) William Milligan -
joined the British Royal Artillery in 1830 (approx)
he was born in Buncrana - and I suspect he may have
served in Fort Dunree - have you by any chance and
(sic) records from that period - also have you by
any chance a photo of the Fort today - or any photos
of the Fort in the 1830's - I would be willing to
pay any costs.
I am a citizen of Eire - but used to be a gunner in
the British Army.

The Rockhill
Collection, gathered over many years by retired Sgt.
Jackie Keenan and retired Private Jim Gallagher, is
a permanent exhibition at Fort Dunree. It includes
many items of military memorabilia from home and
abroad.
