Classy Carndonagh retain title 22.08.08
Carndonagh ladies set sights on league and cup double

by Simon McGeady, Inishowen Independent

CARNDONAGH ladies football team clinched back-to-back Shoe and Sports Inishowen Ladies League titles last Monday night with a 6-0 way win over Cockhill Celtic in their final league fixture.
Niall McGuinness’ girls only required a point to clinch the league, but the became champions in style with goals from Zoe Doherty (2), Deirdre Foley, Anita Doherty and Danielle Gordon and Denise Doherty.
Following a presentation on the pitch in Cockhill, celebrations continued long into the evening back in Carn at the Arch Inn.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent following the win, Mr McGuinness praised his ladies for their dedication throughout the season.
“We started training in January and all season the girls attitude was first rate. They are very keen in training and are easy to work with, there is no questioning or backchat when I gave them instructions,” said the Carn manager.
Carn’s win over Cockhill meant they held off title rivals Greencastle, the only team to beat them in the league this season.
“The two games against Greencastle were the toughest. It was smooth sailing for us up to the first game, in Greencastle, but we weren’t at the races at all down there,” said McGuinness of the 2-0 defeat at the start of July which saw Greencastle briefly hit
the top of the league.
“We were up for the second game against Greencastle, I could see it in the girls eyes that they were hungry for the win. We were more up for it than Greencastle, though they had a few girls missing, and we won 4-2.”
Carndonagh will be going for the double latter this month when they take on Greencastle in the Cup Final. Niall is expecting another tough game.
“We’ve got Greencastle in the cup final and I know they will want to stop us doing the double, but I think we can do it.”
McGuinness paid tribute to the new players that came into his side this season.
“We have great talent in the team with the likes of Zoe [Doherty] and Treasa [Doherty] but Rosie McColgan, Danielle Gordon, Georgina Gordon and Deborah McLaughlin all came in and played well. We used 23 players this year.”
Can Carn go on to dominate the league for years to come?
“We will wait and see what happens. Some players might not be available next year and that will mean some more U16 players could come into the side. We will regroup next spring and take it from there. I would like to give the National Cup another crack,” said Niall, whose understrength team was knocked out in the first round of this year’s competition in June by Galway outfit Ash Rovers.
