Moville chapel St Pius X will be 50 years old next
month, and to celebrate the occasion a group of
parishioners are producing a commemorative booklet.
The dedication of St Pius X took place on the 26th
of October 1958 – the Feast of Christ the King. It
replaced the old convent chapel, which was razed two
years earlier to make way for the new chapel.
This year the Feast of Christ the King falls on the
23rd of November and that’s the date the six-person
committee producing the booklet are working towards.
“The committee have been meeting regularly since the
middle of the summer. We have gathered a lot of old
photographs and put together articles for the
[booklet],”
said committee member Sheila Meehan, daughter of
John McGuinness, the contractor who oversaw the
building of St Pius X half a century ago.
Sheila added that the booklet would contain roll of
honour listing the names of all the men involved in
building St Pius X. |
Her cousin, Sheila
McClean created the paintings of the Stations of the
Cross that went into the chapel 50 years ago. She
has written a piece for the booklet and has put
together a photo collage of all the paintings.
Moville teacher and local historian Colm Doherty is
bringing together the various contributions for the
booklet. |

Fr William Rafferty was
a young curate in Moville parish at the time. He
helped bring in funds for the project through a
silver circle draw among other initiatives.
“I think it’s fantastic that the occasion is being
marked,” he said.
Though frail and without most of eyesight, the 88
year old, who still lives in Moville wants to be
part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations.
“I will do my best to attend the celebrations. It
will be a special occasion.”
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent, current
Moville Parish Priest, Fr Paddy O’Kane said it was
too early to reveal details of how the diocese
planed to mark the occasion but added he would be
happy to do so in the future.
It’s understood Bishop Seamus Hegarty has been
invited to attend a special event in Moville. |
