SEVERAL thousand homes
and businesses were still without power in Inishowen
today after a severe storm with gusts of 120k/ph and
heavy rain hit the peninsula overnight.
Parts of Muff, Quigley's Point, the Illies in
Buncrana, Glengad and Malin Head were still without
power at 11:30am today.
ESB spokesperson, Brian Hegarty who is working on
the ground and co-ordinating a large team of
technicians who worked through the night, said all
of Inishowen lost power around 10.30pm on Tuesday
after the line feeding the peninsula from
Letterkenny tripped on a number of occasions due to
the gale force gusts.
Some locations including Moville, Greencastle and
Buncrana had power restored within an hour but other
parts were plunged into darkness and still remain
without power today.
"The line coming up from Letterkenny to Inishowen
tripped a couple of times due to the very high winds
but we managed to get it back," said Mr. Hegarty.
He confirmed however, that locally, the line from
Buncrana feeding the Illies, Quigley's Point and the
Muff areas suffered damage as did the line from
Carndonagh feeding Glengad and Malin Head.
Mr. Hegarty warned people to stay away from fallen
power lines and to phone 1850 372 999 to report any.
The ESB hopes to have all supplies to the peninsula
restored by mid-afternoon to teatime although some
isolated places may take longer.
Drivers are being advised to take care due to fallen
trees, powerlines and debris on the roads.
Trees were reported to be down yesterday in areas
such as Birdstown, Burnfoot and Glentogher,
Carndonagh.
It was also reported that a parked car was destroyed
in Malin Head when a caravan overturned on it in the
strong winds.
Meanwhile, around 6,000 homes throughout the North
including Counties Derry and Tyrone were still
without power yesterday morning after the overnight
gales. |
