Sunniest May for eleven years

Inishowen sizzles
over June Bank Holiday
INISHOWEN was looking its brightest and best over
the June Bank Holiday with wall-to-wall sunshine and
sizzling double-digit temperatures.
The organisers of local events and sporting fixtures
were thanking their lucky stars as the weather held
firm, sending thousands flocking to the peninsula's
beaches for picnics, barbecues, swimming and water
sports. |
Among those glad of the
glorious weather were the organisers of Redcastle
Sports Day and the farmers who travelled with their
livestock to Carndonagh Mart on Saturday.
And the good weather continued unabated yesterday
with temperatures soaring to over 22°C in some
sheltered spots.

that their Malin Head
weather station recorded a whopping 25% more
sunshine than normal for the month of May while
there was only a quarter of the usual rainfall for
the same month.
On May 26, there were 15.3 hours of sunshine
recorded at Malin Head - the highest value for May
since 1997.
And over the weekend, temperatures hit a scorching
24°C in some parts of the peninsula. But it was left
to Met Eireann forecaster Gerry Scully to break the
bad news: "The very good weather that you've seen in
the past number of days is coming to a close," he
said. "Rain is moving in and Tuesday will be notably
fresher than recent days. The weather will be more
variable for the rest of the week with temperatures
dropping back from the early to mid-20s to the
teens," said Mr. Scully. |
