Buncrana spruces up for Tidy
judges
30.06.08
BUNCRANA'S Tidy Towns
committee is hoping to once again improve its marks
in this year’s national competition and have urged
members of the local community to get behind their
campaign.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent PRO Columba
Quigley explained that adjudicators from the
competition are expected in the town in the next few
weeks and he urged everyone to weigh in and play
their part.
“The judges will be looking out for approach roads,
sign posts, floral displays, boundary fences, common
areas, shop fronts, residential areas, litter
control, road markings and general tidiness.” |
He added that derelict
buildings especially those that are not maintained
lose the town loads of marks each year and he asked
the owners of these buildings to make an effort to
clear up the sites.
Last year Buncrana was top of category D in Donegal,
scoring 259 marks, but they are hoping that they can
improve on that showing this time out.
Over the past number of months hard working
volunteers from the local group have been out in |

force conducting
community clean-ups and generally working on
improving various areas of the town.
The group has also developed a web site on
www.buncranatidytowns.com in an effort to
get their message out to a wider audience and
hopefully get some new volunteers on board to help
with their efforts.
“From last year’s results we know that litter and
waste are two areas which need improvement.
Businesses also need to give a helping hand, to
improve their image like the previous winners of the
competition,” he suggested.
Meanwhile the local group are not only continuing
with their ongoing work in cleaning up the
community, but have also once again kicked off this
year’s garden competition.
Sponsored by Super Valu the competition has some
terrific prizes on offer in various categories
including small garden, large garden, residential
area, commercial premises and floral displays.
