Tidy towns group vow to "try harder" 06.10.08

THE hardworking Buncrana Tidy Towns committee has vowed to "try harder next year" to boost the town's marks in the national competition.
The local committee recently held its AGM and are already planning ahead for 2009. Buncrana gained two extra points in 2008 - from 259 to 261.
"These were gained because of the hard work of the Buncrana community. The committee take this opportunity to thank all those concerned," said spokesperson Columba Quigley.
The town's marks were broken down as follows: overall development approach, 39 out of 50; the built environment, 38 out of 50; landscaping, 41 out of 50; wildlife and natural awarness, 36 out of 50; litter control, 24 out of 50; waste minimisation, 8 out of 20; tidiness, 14 out of 30; residential areas, 26 out of 40; roads, steets and back areas, 27 out of 50 and general impression, 8 out of 10.
Hard at work earlier this year are back row left to right Liam Igoe, Cyril Quinn, Patricia Gallagher, George McDermott, Liam Rainey, Brendan McLaughlin. Front from left Columba Quigley, Donna Lynch, Joe McCauley and Eddie Burke.
"We feel we didn’t get enough marks for litter control. Volunteers were out every Wednesday and Saturday form late March to early September but our efforts were not rewarded by extra marks. However, we are not despondent and will try harder next year," added Columba.
Everyone in the town is invited to a meeting tonight, Monday, October 6 at 8.00pm in the local library.
"The way Buncrana looks is the concern of all. As well as the general public, we ask the Chamber of Commerce, schools, businesses, voluntary groups, clergy, council, councillors, public bodies and residents' groups to send representatives to the meeting to voice their opinions."
