Yacht breaks moorings in
rough seas
19.08.08
IT'S more a scene you
might expect in winter but the rough August weather
resulted in this yacht landing on rocks in Lough
Foyle. |
|
Local vessel 'Nokomis'
was anchored off Carrickarory Pier near Moville when
fairly strong winds and choppy seas caused her to
break her moorings and drift ashore around 11.15am
on Saturday.
Moville Boat Club member Seamus Bovaird outlined
what happened.
"When she went ashore onto the rocks, the tide was
ebbing so nothing could be done for several hours," |
he said.
He added that local boat club members along with the
Greencastle Coast Guard had to wait until late
afternoon to begin the rescue operation using the
Coast Guard's Delta vessel.
"George McCormick and Danny McDonald from the boat
club went aboard along with Cathal McGuinness from
the Coast Guard and with the help of the rest of the
Coast Guard team, they got her hooked up to the
Delta. They had to put fenders underneath her and
then had to wait for the tide," he said.
The 'Nokomis' suffered minor damage to the rudder in
the incident and was towed to Greencastle Harbour
for repairs. |
