INISHOWEN'S seven new youth councillors will convene
for the first time next Monday to elect their
chairperson, vice-chair and secretary.
The new councillors were elected last Wednesday. The
count, held at the Civic Offices in Carndonagh,
began at 10.15am and concluded with the election of
the final candidate, Lauren Harrigan of Moville
Community College, some five hours later.
Carndonagh Community School’s Padraig Doherty topped
the poll, with Matthew Arthur of Crana College also
elected on the first count. |
Subsequent rounds saw
(in no particular order) Laura O’Connell (Scoil
Mhuire), Sara Friel (Carndonagh Community School),
David Lynch (Scoil Mhuire) and Barry Kearney (Carndonagh
Community School).
That left two Moville Community College girls, Katie
McGilloway and Lauren Harrigan battling it out for
the final seat. And at 3:05pm, Returning Officer
Aideen Doherty announced that after Barry Kaerney’s

18 votes had been
counted, Ms. Harrigan had been elected without
reaching the quota, following her brother, the
out-going councillor Ciaran Harrigan, into office.
The other unlucky candidate was Danielle Ní
Dhomhnaill (Collaiste Chineal Eoghan) The total
valid poll was 2093.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent after the
results had been announced Kellie Gallagher, Donegal
Youth Council Manager said,
“The youth council gives young people a voice within
the county. The opinions of the youth councillors
are very well respected. It’s a great opportunity to
be involved in public society. Young people bring
different ideas that adults might not necessarily
think of,” said the Dunfanaghy woman. “In the past
two years councillors have tackled topics such as
sexual health, road safety, mental health and
Internal school relations.”
The Inishowen councillors will convene for the first
time in Carndonagh on November 10 to elected a
chair, vice chair and secretary. Delegates to the
full Donegal Youth Council will also be determined.
This is the fourth Inishowen Youth Council. They
will serve for two years. |
