16.10.08
STUDENTS from across
Inishowen will go to the polls on Monday as the race
for seats in the Donegal Youth Council gets under
way.
Seven seats are up for grabs in the Inishowen
Electoral area in the council, with ten candidates
currently in the battle for a seat coming from the
five-second level schools in the peninsula.
Successful candidates hold a two-year term of office
during which time they attend monthly meetings in
each electoral area.
The councillors are elected by their peers to
identify issues and promote projects in response to
young peoples needs.
The youth councillors also have a democratic mandate
to give young people a voice and allow them to take
appropriate action.
Among the local candidates this year is Danielle ní
Dhomhnaill the first student from Gaelcholáiste
Chineál Eoghain in Buncrana to seek a seat on the
youth council. |
She outlined to the
Inishowen Independent that she was going forward as
a candidate because she wants to represent the
interests of young people in this area.
“I don’t think they get the always get fair play,
and I would like to give them all the help I am
capable of, so they can have a voice in their own
society. Also, I want to promote the Irish language,
and to show young people that a life though Irish |

can be fun and good
craic,” she said.
Scoil Mhuire student Laura O’Connell, one of two
students from the school seeking election, said she
had a number of important issues to raise.
“Among the issues I’ll be hoping to highlight is the
need for more lockers, upgraded toilet facilities,
better buses and more activities for students.”
She also suggested that she would be highlighting in
her campaign the aim of trying to stamp out bullying
and racism as well as the need for a better
environment.
