THE proposed €900,000
breakwater at Buncrana Pier is being expedited by
the Department of Fisheries, according to Inishowen
Senator Cecilia Keaveney.
Revised drawings for the breakwater, designed to
help the RNLI get out of the harbour in emergencies,
were sent for approval last week by Donegal County
Council to the Department while.
Senator Keaveney said she would keep up the pressure
to ensure that construction begins as soon as
possible.
'I'm raising the issue of the breakwater with
Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture,
Food and Fisheries, John Browne, on a weekly basis
as it is one of growing concern for all the parties
involved," she said.
"He informed me that the Department is still in
communication with the Chief State Solicitor's
Office concerning the preparation of an appropriate
draft lease in respect of the breakwater. Revised
drawings in respect of the proposed breakwater were
received from Donegal County Council on Tuesday,
February 26 and these have been referred to the
Department’s engineering division for approval.
"I have been given an assurance by the Minister that
every effort is being made to expedite the matter
and that it is being given urgent attention at both
administrative and legal level. While ultimately the
final lease will have to be agreed by all the
relevant parties he is confident that the issue is
near solution.”
Senator Keaveney said Minister Browne had again
included the €900,000 granted for the construction
of the breakwater in Buncrana in this year’s budget.
"It underscores the commitment to have the
breakwater built as soon as the Chief State
Solicitor's Office has concluded the leaseand I will
continue to work closely with him on the matter,"
added Senator Keaveney. |
