Seven compete for big Buncrana contract 12.10.07

DECENTRALISATION by the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs to Ardaravan in Buncrana appears to be some way off.
Junior Finance Minister Noel Ahern told Senator Cecilia Keaveney in the Seanad this week that a timeframe for the project could not be confirmed.
However, Mr. Ahern revealed that the tender process for construction had been 'extremely competitive' with seven contractors now being considered for the lucrative deal.
The development at the inner relief road at Ardaravan is to include the decentralised Government offices over three storeys, a new Garda district headquarters and a new driving test centre.
But Senator Keaveney said the decentralisation proposal for Buncrana should not be left languishing.
"We have to move on and make it a reality. The quality of life in Buncrana is immense and I think there should be no back pedalling in relation to developing the site," she said.
In response to her concerns in relation to the delays in a new Garda station for the town, Mr. Ahern said Gardai were in the process of moving to new temporary offices in Lisfannon.
The new Garda district HQ at Lisfannon. "The Garda district HQ was previously located at St. Oran's Road. However, as this premises is wholly inadequate An Garda Siochana is currently in the process of moving to temporary accommodation at Lisfannon Industrial Estate in the short term, pending the erection of the new station," he said.
"The tender competition for
construction of all three elements proved extremely competitive and consideration of the tenders is now underway."
Meanwhile, local Gardai say they expect to be based at the former Clubman Omega shirt factory for around 18 months.
