Cash boost for Buncrana Accordian
Band
10.12.07
THE prize-winning
Buncrana Youth Accordian Band is in line for funding
that will help sustain it into the future.
The local band is among cash-strapped community
music groups throughout the county that have been
granted funding by the Department of Arts, Sports
and Tourism. |
Senator Cecilia
Keaveney, herself a musician and music graduate, led
the campaign for funding when she was chair of the
Joint Committee on Arts, Sports, Tourism, Community,
Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs as a TD. She welcomed
news of the much-needed funding for the bands
throughout the county and |

country.
“This Supplementary Estimate includes funds for a
Community Music Programme and I am delighted because
this is exactly what is required to support small
community music groups nationwide,” said Senator
Keaveney.
"Many marching bands, in particular, have been very
successful nationally and internationally but they
have relied heavily on the small number of committed
volunteers that exist in many of our communities.
"They have struggled to pay the transport, insurance
and basic costs that are associated with any
organisation before buying music, instruments and
uniforms is even considered."
The Inishowen-based senator said the funding
recognised the importance of bands to the
development of young people and to the community.
"This funding at last recognises our bands, concert
bands and amateur youth and their importance to our
young people's development and to the enjoyment
factor for us all when festival time comes around,"
she added. |
