A GROUP of residents in
the Aghilly and Bauville areas of Buncrana have
appealed to the local council to support their fight
against a waste transfer station near their homes.
The residents have been fighting the proposed
private recycling centre for two years since the
first planning application for the facility was
rejected by planners in 2005.
A second application was withdrawn later that year
but a revised application is now before Donegal
County Council, with a decision due in August.
The Aghilly Residents' Association, told Buncrana
Town Council that the proposal is not suitable for
the residential nature of their location and they
also fear the risk of pollution.
However, chairperson Aine Daly said road safety was
the primary reason the group were against the plan.
"Traffic safety is already a major issue on this
road which is a county secondary road.
There have been a lot of new housing developments in
the Aghilly area in recent years.
"The applicants plan to drive lorries up and down
the road but we feel the road structure is not
suitable for these lorries and the increase in
traffic would be unsafe for our families and our
children," she said.
The applicant, a local man, previously said in a
press interview that he had run a similar waste
transfer station in an urban residential environment
in England with no problems and no complaints. |
