Friel's 'Flight' play goes on
tour
09.07.07
BRIAN Friel's play on
the Flight of the Earls, 'Making History', began a
lengthy tour last night as part of the 400th
anniversary commemoration. 'Making History' staged
by Ouroboros Theatre Company, opened at Charlesfort,
Kinsale, before embarking on a national and European
tour of sites associated with the 1607 journey. |
The play tells the
story of the fateful historic chain of events that
began in September 1607, six years after the Battle
of Kinsale, when the Earl of Tyrone, Hugh O’Neill
and the Earl of Tyrconnell, Rory O’Donnell boarded a
ship at Rathmullan bound for Spain.
They never reached Spain and O’Neill died a broken,
blind and defeated man in Italy. |
|
Friel's story tells of
events leading up to the Battle of Kinsale and the
journey from Mellifont Abbey to Rathmullan, via
O'Neill's birthplace Dungannon and Donegal, where
O’Donnell lived. It also tells of the earls' journey
from Rathmullan to Paris and onwards to Louvain.
'Making History' will be staged in a total of 22
Irish venues including the Rock of Cashel and the
Hill of Tara. It will be performed in Donegal Castle
on July 21st and July 22nd and in Rathmullan Fort on
September 13th. It will also be staged in France,
Belgium and Italy.
