Inishowen beaches need funding
01.11.07
INISHOWEN beaches need
more funding next year for bins, changing rooms,
safety signs and lifebelts.
That's according to Donegal Senator, Brian
O’Domhnaill who is calling for a Seanad discussion
on how local authorities can play a part in
maximising the potential of beaches throughout the
county. |
There was outrage
earlier this year when Culdaff lost its prestigious
Blue Flag due to ongoing camping in the sand dunes.
Senator O’Domhnaill told the Seanad that beaches in
his native county were among "the nicest and most
unspoiled in Europe". |

But he said they lacked
the structured support needed to realise their true
potential.
“I have proposed that a plan be devised, through
local authorities, to ensure that beaches are
protected and, where suitable, developed somewhat
with basic requirements such as bins, changing
rooms, signage, and lifebelts," he said.
“Structured and safe walkways can also add immensely
to a beach area.”
The Fianna Fail senator said funding for such works
"was not readily available".
“I have called on the Minister for the Environment
to attend the Seanad for a discussion on the
potential of our beaches and their development, as
compared with beaches on mainland Europe,” he said. |
