Donegal public
sector workers including Gardai, teachers and civil
servants now earn an average of €900 per week.
The figures, based on gross income and including
overtime, were released by the Central Statistics
Office (CSO) and show that public servants now earn
an average of €275 per week more than workers in
industry.
Broken down, the CSO table shows gross average Garda
earnings at €1,286pw; secondary teachers, €1,004pw;
primary teachers, €836pw; VEC second level teachers,
€794pw; administrative civil servants, €837pw and
lecturers in institutes of technology, €949pw.
The league table also shows that the average gross
weekly wage for public sector workers with local
authorities is €781.
The comparisons take no account of pension
entitlements, which are also generally considered to
be superior in the public sector than elsewhere.
The Irish Small and Medium Enterprise (ISME) group
hit out at the salaries.
Chief executive, Mark Fielding, said public servants
got "two bites at the pay cherry" because they got
salary rises through social partnership and again
through benchmarking.
