GARDAI are planning a
major crackdown on boy racers in Inishowen and the
rest of Donegal.
They will target young men aged between 18 and 26
who are considered a high risk of causing accidents.
The crackdown was mooted at a meeting on Monday of
the Joint Policing Committee in a bid to tackle road
carnage in the county which has one of the highest
levels of fatalities Ireland.
So far this year, 17 people have been killed on
Donegal roads.
Letterkenny-based Supt. Vincent O'Brien, who worked
for some years in Inishowen, said local Gardai had
met the Garda Inspectorate to address the problem of
young drivers speeding on the roads.
It is understood that staff from the inspectorate
have been carrying out a countrywide study of road
safety, with particular attention on the border
counties.
Donegal has been highlighted as a particular area of
concern.
Supt. O'Brien said: "We will be targeting the
specific 18-26-year-old boy racers who are in the
high-risk category."
Meanwhile, Inishowen road safety campaigner, Susan
Gray of Public Against Road Carnage (PARC) welcomed
the Government's plan to cut the drink drive limit.
The move could put drivers over the limit with just
one pint of beer or glass of wine.
"It should deter drivers from drinking and driving
completely because they will never be sure if they
are over the limit. Most of them won't take that
chance although there are a percentage of drivers
out there who won't listen to anything except the
fear of getting caught," said Ms. Gray. |
