Supt. to probe handling of
Dunne tragedy
25.04.07
A senior Garda has been
appointed to examine how the force handled the case
of a young Burt woman found dead on Monday with her
husband and two children at their home in Wexford.
And the Government has confirmed it will sanction an
independent inquiry into the case in due course.
The bodies of 24-year old Ciara Dunne, nee O'Brien,
her children, Leanne, 5, and Shania, 3, and husband
Adrian, 29, were discovered at 2pm at their home in
Monageer, near Enniscorthy. |
|
It's emerged that fears
were raised for their safety last Friday, when Mr.
Dunne contacted a local undertaker enquiring about
funeral arrangements for his family.
Gardai have ruled out accidental death and are not
seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.
Ciara is the daughter of Marian (nee McDermott) and
P.J. O'Brien, Bohillion, |
Burt, who manages the
local hurling team.
Her uncle, developer and hotelier, P.J. McDermott,
is due to get married to his fiancée, former Miss
Ireland, Natasha Nic Gairbeith on Saturday.
It's understood the horrific tragedy about her
daughter and grand-daughters was related to Marian
O'Brien after a friend of Ciara's heard the news on
the radio.
"It's just devastating. We're all so shocked; we're
ringing each other trying to make sense of it all.
Friends and neighbours are rallying around to try
and support P.J and Marian as best they can," said a
family friend.
Funeral details are still unconfirmed as the four
post mortem examinations continued late into
yesterday. The scene still remains cordoned off for
forensic examination.
The Health Service Executive confirmed they had been
contacted about the case.
A HSE spokesperson said the local childcare manager
reminded Gardaí of the out-of-hours services,
CareDoc for medical concerns and Section 12 of the
Childcare Act 1991 for children at risk. This allows
Gardaí to remove a child to a place of safety, which
in Wexford would have been Wexford General Hospital.
The couple and their children, moved into their
newly built council house last summer. They had
lived, for a time a number of years ago, in the
Bridgend area. It was confirmed yesterday that a
brother of Mr. Dunne, who was registered blind, had
taken his own life in recent weeks and that Mr.
Dunne was taking the loss badly. Garda Commissioner
Noel Conroy yesterday appointed Supt. Pat Mangan of
Kilkenny Garda Station, to enquire into the handling
of the matter by local Gardai. |
