PEOPLE in
Manorcunningham are demanding the reinstatement of a
bus stop in their village after a pensioner was
killed as he crossed a busy road to catch a bus.
Seamus Gorman, 65, was fatally injured after being
struck by a van around 6pm on Wednesday. He was
attempting to cross the main road to catch the Lough
Swilly bus from Letterkenny to Derry as he did every
day.
Prior to a spate of cutbacks due to a lack of
Government subsidies, the Lough Swilly bus would go
through the village to collect passengers.
When the service was axed, locals took to the
airwaves in a campaign to have the service
reinstated.
They also collected a petition with 480 names that
was submitted to the Lough Swilly Bus Company
calling for a return of their village stop.
Manorcunningham Resource Centre chairperson, Carmel
Doherty, said Mr. Gorman's death highlighted the
need to reinstate the bus stop in the village
immediately.
"The Lough Swilly bus service was rerouted out of
the village and instead of actually coming directly
to the village now, anybody who needs to catch the
bus has to go down to the main Derry road," Ms.
Doherty told Highland Radio.
"Most of the bus users are either young people using
it to go to Letterkenny or our old age pensioners
who would use it to go into Letterkenny for their
shopping or to get their pensions." For Mr. Gorman's
