A BRIDGEND farmer is
counting the cost of a fire on Wednesday night that
killed eleven cattle and more than ten lambing
sheep.
The blaze broke out in a hayshed on the farm of
Stephen Fairman, Carrowreagh around 11pm before
spreading to two adjacent livestock sheds.
Four units of the fire brigade from both sides of
the border attended the fire - believed to have been
caused by an electrical fault.
Mr. Fairman told InishowenNews.com he estimated his
loss would run to well over €11,000 not including
the extensive damage to the three outbuildings.
“We managed to get some cattle out but couldn’t get
to the rest because of heavy smoke. The fire also
spread to a shed with sheep that were heavily in
lamb. We don’t know at this stage how many lambing
sheep we’ve lost but it’s at least ten.”
A shocked Mr. Fairman said he was running an errand
when he received a call on his mobile phone about
the fire.
“When I got home around 11.30pm the fire was well
underway. It’s a terrible upsetting sight here today
with all the dead and the sick animals. Some of the
animals have suffered burns to their eyes and lips
and many are wheezing badly due to the smoke
inhalation. More animals will have to be put down.”
A truck from the Dead Animal Collection Agency in
Cavan and a vet were expected at the farm yesterday
afternoon. |
