Inishowen schools
can look forward to cross-border benefits arising
from the new Department of Education in the North.
North Ireland's Education Minister designate,
Caitriona Ruane, said cross-border co-operation was
the best way of meeting the educational needs of the
island.
"The exchange of best practice, the development of
the professionalism of teachers and all involved in
education and improved mobility of teachers are all
examples of how we can practically work together for
the good of our young people.
"The opportunities are exciting, enabling us to pool
our expertise and achieve better outcomes," Ms.
Ruane told the Association of Secondary Teachers
Ireland (ASTI) conference in Sligo yesterday. The
incumbent Sinn Fein minister, said she believed
North and South could "move beyond the divisions of
the past".
"Together we can move forward to ensure that every
young person in Ireland can achieve their full
potential," she said.
"We have a real opportunity to develop confident
young citizens, able to work together, to create
secure and prosperous futures for themselves and for
future generations."
