Farmers urged to consider forestry 24.08.07

Inishowen farmers are being encouraged to consider diversifying into a new type of forestry.
Donegal North East T.D., Deputy Niall Blaney said the Forest Environment Protection Scheme (FEPS) would enhance the livelihoods of farmers already availing of the Rural Environment Protection Scheme (REPS).
"The FEPS scheme is designed to encourage the establishment of high-nature-value woodlands on REPS farms, a new type of forestry which combines a high environmental contribution with strong economic potential,” said Deputy Blaney.
He encouraged REPS farmers to examine the opportunities forestry now presents and factor it into their farm-plan going forward.
“There has been a good take-up of the scheme in Donegal to date and although FEPS was originally introduced on a pilot basis, in line with commitments made in the Programme for Government, it will now be fully rolled-out," he explained.
Full details and conditions of the FEPS scheme are available at www.agriculture.gov.ie , at LoCall 1890 200 223, or from Teagasc offices.
