Grave-size limits for Buncrana 08.05.07

A Donegal parish priest has introduced a limit on the size of new graves.
Fr. John Walsh of Buncrana, said there would no longer be provision for double graves at St. Mary's Cemetery, Cockhill, with all new plots subject to a width limit of four feet.
There will be no restriction, however, on the depth of new graves.
Fr. Walsh said he had to introduce the width limit for the parish's new graveyard - a one-and-a-half acre site adjoining the existing burial ground.

Graves in the new Cockhill cemetery will be capped at 4ft wide. "Space at the cemetery is now at a premium. Our existing graveyard is almost full so we have no option but to introduce grave-size limits in the new one," said Fr. Walsh.
"In the past we've had double graves dug with the remains of only one person in them. We just don't have the space to allow such provision any more.
"The graves can be whatever depth a person chooses, perhaps 8ft or 9ft - which would hold the remains of maybe three people."
Fr. Walsh, who has been parish priest in the Inishowen town for nearly eight years, said the parish has also had to introduce a fee for non-residents.
Grave plots are currently free for residents but non-residents will, in future, have to pay €300 for a plot.
"For example, we might have residents who want to bury their parents here. They will now have to pay €300 for a plot," added Fr. Walsh.
Cremation is not a popular choice in the area. Fr. Walsh said no deceased in the parish had been cremated since his arrival in the area in 1999.
