Foyle fishermen ‘delighted’ with breakthrough 28.03.07

Foyle Fisherman’s Co-Op has welcomed Donegal County Council’s pledge of €2m to complete a €16.5m breakwater at Greencastle Harbour.
The first phase of the major development can now get underway after the local authority agreed to fund the required 12.5% of the total cost.
The Government will foot the majority of the bill after Greencastle was designated by Rural Affairs Minister Eamon O Cuiv as a Clar area of

economic disadvantage.
This in effect halved the Council’s portion of the bill from 25% to 12.5%.
Foyle Fisherman’s Co-Op manager, John O’Kane welcomed the breakthrough and said the development would be a huge boost to the local fishing industry.
Mr. O’Kane said safety would be improved at the local port and he thanked the local authority and local representatives who consistently lobbied for the development including Moville-based T.D., Deputy Cecilia Keaveney.
Greencastle is the second largest harbour in Donegal. The local fishing industry had been waiting a number of years for the deal to be rubberstamped.
