Inishowen’s €300 childcare bills 10.04.07

Parents in Buncrana, Carndonagh and other parts of Inishowen are paying up to €300 a week for childcare, according to a local election candidate.
Labour Party hopeful, Siobhan McLaughlin, said despite the country’s economic success many families in Donegal North East were no better off.
“Childcare remains a major issue,” she said, after another day on the campaign trail.
“In Buncrana, Carndonagh, Letterkenny and Milford, families are feeling stretched, paying very high fees for crèches and childminding.
“One women said to me that the you first have to find someone to mind your children before you even get to discuss the fee. If you are paying for more than one child to be minded the bill can be up to €300 a week.”

The Buncrana-born candidate said she was committed to fighting for sustainable childcare places throughout the constituency.
“One family I met was paying for childcare for a child under five and supporting another to attend third level in Dublin. Most of the family’s income was taken up with these outgoings.

"It just doesn't make sense and shows how the Government and our local TDs have lost touch.”
A mother herself, Ms. McLaughlin said childcare was a recurrent issue on the doorsteps of Inishowen.
“The Labour Party stands for more support to families and particularly in relation to childcare.
“We have clear policies on offering additional support to families by providing free pre-school education and working for affordable and accessible childcare as well as support to families buying their first home.”
