€23,000 for Donegal litter
campaign
25.07.07
DONEGAL County Council
has been awarded €23,000 to promote public awareness
and education on litter.
Fianna Fáil TD for Donegal North East, Niall Blaney
yesterday welcomed the allocation and said it,
combined with the increase in on-the-spot litter
fines from €125 to €150, was a "vital step" in
changing the mentality that allows people to litter.
“This is part of a national campaign that will see
almost €1 million dedicated to the cause," he said.
“In Donegal it will include local media campaigns,
clean ups, school competitions, exhibitions and the
production of anti-litter media material.
“We all know that dumping refuse sacks in the
countryside is wrong and that kind of thing is
generally accepted. But many people think little of
dropping a cigarette butt on the ground and yet the
principal is the same.”
He said cigarette butts constituted the highest
percentage of litter in most areas of the country.
“Donegal is a beautiful county. The county has so
much to be proud of in its natural attractions.
“Litter spoils our natural countryside. We must take
pride in our surroundings and in the cleanliness of
our county.” |
